Jardins Ouvriers

"A few years ago French photographer Marie-Pierre Vincent settled with her family in the town of Saint Etienne where the local social authorities commissioned her to document the jardin ouvriers, or "workers" gardens, in the area. Vividly portraying how the gardens are used throughout the year, the photos reveal their value for the community." - Bloom








There is something warming, humble and graceful about these modern-day photos of workers' gardens. These spaces emerged in the late 19th century to provide laborers a place to grow food and improve their quality of life. As spring approaches and I start thinking about our own little patch of green, I'm inspired by the history of these jardins and the people who worked so hard to produce their sustenance and bring beauty to their communities.
